Our Story
Velocity was born in 1989 in a backyard shed outside Brisbane, Australia. Tom Black was a one-person manufacturing machine making aluminum water bottle cages by hand. Sales spread outside of Australia to the US by way of Tom’s brother, John Black.
In 1991 we introduced our first aluminum rim, the Aero. In 1998, we began to sell our rims as fully built wheels.
The Wheel Department in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was formed to be able to meet the demand for hand-built wheels in 2011.
In 2016, we moved all production to our facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
In 2023, long-time employee Matt Ruiter bought Velocity USA from Tom Black. The first new rim we designed under Matt's guidance was named the Aero, as tribute to the first aluminum rim Tom introduced.
Today, we’re still transforming the best available materials into high-end rims and wheels to support the passion of cyclists everywhere.
